Samhain Elixir

Apple, ginger and rosemary refresher

Apple, ginger and rosemary refresher

This month’s magickal elixir recipe has been created by acclaimed food writer, forager & cook Clare Knivett. Her passion is connecting people to nature and the seasons through guided walks, workshops, recipes and supper clubs - bringing back some of the knowledge and lore that we have lost through capitalism, consumerism and convenience. She believes fervently in the power & beauty of the Earth and all that she provides.

This non-alcoholic mocktail is warming yet refreshing with a hint of sparkle. The perfect drink to celebrate Halloween, Pagan NYE and the pagan festival Samhain, all of which take place on the 31st October.

Apples are a hugely symbolic fruit featured prominently throughout art, religion and science. Think garden of Eden and Isaac Newton for example. For the Greeks it was associated with Aphrodite, Goddess of love. In paganism it is held in high regard because of its physical attributes. When sliced into discs a 5 pointed star or pentacle is revealed at its core. This symbol represents the 4 elements earth, air, water and fire with the fifth, skyward facing point, referring to the human spirit; reminding us of our connection and oneness with nature. I’ve combined this with fiery ginger to bring warmth and spice ( it is also said to ward off evil ) plus medicinal and aromatic rosemary, a symbol of love and loyalty which is said to dispel grief and bitterness. A stimulant and tonic for the whole body it is also associated with remembrance, fitting nicely with this spiritual time where we also remember all souls.
